How tough are you? Really, on a scale of 1-10, how strong are you mentally? I ask this because recently I have been asking myself this question quite a lot. Not because I like talking to myself …
That would be silly, wouldn’t it Jamie?
It’s because I have entered what I have come to know as the ‘pain period’. That ambiguous state of existence where all I can think about is whether I will succeed or fail, and if I do succeed, how long it will take.
In my previous article, I described about how I gave up my boring mundane job to start teaching guitar and to start earning some sort of income through writing. I’ll admit that while I never expected it to be easy, it’s certainly a lot tougher than I originally guessed.
It’s ok though, I’m tough and I can do this.
This is what I am telling myself every day:
1. Accept that Things will Get Worse before they Get Better
This is something that everyone should expect when they make a big lifestyle change. It is very difficult to transition into something new, especially when you have little knowledge or experience regarding the industry. There will be a period of time where you have to learn and make mistakes. This is fine and I would say it is even welcome, as long as you realise where you can improve and to not make the same mistakes more than once, you will always be on the right track.
2. Every Successful Person went through the Same Process
You think you’re alone feeling like this? Of course you’re not; every single successful person in history went through the same period of self-doubt and anxiety. Where they differ from most people is in having the ability to push through and motivate themselves to get to where they want to be. You too can be like these people; you can be successful, and you can achieve what you want as long as you truly want it.
3. Don’t Fight these Negative Thoughts
The problem with negativity is that most of us tend to fight and reject it like it is some form of disease that is infesting our body and mind. It isn’t. Such feelings are a sign of growth and progress. Embrace these feelings, for without them complacency will set in and progress will be stifled. Accept every thought that comes into your mind, good and bad, for they will make you a stronger and a more able person in the long run.
4. Every New Day is One Day Closer to Happiness
Times are tough now - sure - but every new day is one day closer to the day when you will succeed. There will be a time when you will look back on this and you will be proud of yourself for pushing through the pain barrier. Your future self will be thankful that you were stronger than you gave yourself credit for. Tomorrow you will be one step closer to becoming that person and experiencing the life that they lead. Never forget this.
5. You Don’t have to Do This Alone
We often think that the universe will reward those that put in the hard graft; that knuckling down and blasting through is more than enough. We can often forget that the most successful people also leverage their friends, family and acquaintances to give them a helping hand through the bad times. Lean on these people for support and guidance, as that is what they are there for. You don’t have to do it all alone, so swallow a bit of pride and ask for help if you need it.
6. Trust Yourself
There is something you may have overlooked here: you were strong enough to dream of a better future and even stronger to try to make it happen. While some people may have told you that you were foolish, a larger number would have been impressed with your boldness and your courage. Most people would love to do what you are doing and they resent themselves for not taking the plunge when they had the chance. This is now your time, so keep doing what you have been doing and if your goal is simply to get better, you will never be truly disappointed.
I believe these principles can be applied to any area of our lives. It doesn’t matter if you have recently made a big change, you plan to make a change or you simply feel like progress in a certain area of your life has stalled. Negative feelings will always pass eventually and, when they do, providing you carried on doing your best, you will come out the other side a stronger, tougher, more inspired person.
You’re already a success; you just don’t know it yet.

Excellent article and much appreciated.
When I gave up a totally secure job, pension etc I was stopped on the stairs at work by a guy I only knew a little, to be told how much he admired me.
Scared me a little actually!
I think I’m still in a pain period Jamie but I’m seeing, sensing and almost tasting the breakthrough beyond!
