We've all been given unique dreams that when realized will set the course of our lives for greatness. Sadly most dreams never find life because their owners follow the wrong path. They look to the successes of others or the fastest "road to riches," and miss the special calling that is theirs alone.
If you're searching for your path, you must first discover what it is and how to achieve it. However, that isn't always easy because most people don't have a success environment to emulate. I certainly didn't so I turned to a distant source of help to guide me. I call it the David and Goliath principle based upon I Samuel 17:50 in the Old Testament.
In my early twenties I decided that I wanted David's strength and courage to fight against the odds that I would be a failure in life. My family had always told me that I wasn't smart enough to achieve much in life so I needed to keep my goals small. As I grew older it became imperative that I break the mold of failure they held over me before it became a reality.
This young man, David the son of Jesse from Beth-lehemite, who began his career as a sheepherder became my mentor as I learned more about his life. He too had a family that looked upon him with little favor, yet he never faltered in his ability to give his best, especially when he killed Goliath without anyone believing that he could. He was a joke to men, but God had given him a dream and even though David didn't know what it was in the beginning, he had faith in God to do whatever He asked.
David was to become king over Israel! But how does a common shepherd boy go from tending sheep to killing a giant to becoming a king? One might say that God gives special ability to only a few people to accomplish extraordinary feats of greatness when necessary, but that's not the case. We can all be like David when it comes to our dreams, but we have to acquire his work ethic first.
If we follow David's rise to success we'll see a pattern of commitment that when utilized will get us where we need to go even if we don't yet know our direction. This is because God is always trying to prepare us for greatness, but because we're either complaining about where we are in life or we're looking too far ahead, we don't receive his guidance.
Goliath wasn't the first giant David had killed. While sitting for hours tending his sheep at what many would consider a "boring job," David used his time wisely by worshiping God and developing his strength and his faith. As a result, he was able to protect his sheep at all costs even when his job called upon him to kill a lion and a bear to save one lamb.
Always going the extra mile, David rose to the occasion by slaying them both, thus taking back the lamb that was in his care. This thankful young man didn't complain about his circumstances, he used them instead as preparation for something great. He trusted that God had planted a dream in his heart to be realized somehow and someday.
This is how we learn who we are and what we should do with our lives. We take what we have at the moment with excitement by developing our talents and building our characters for the next step of preparation God has waiting for us. Greatness will always follow.
If you believe you're stuck in a "boring job" I suggest you do what David did. Eliminate the word "impossible" from your vocabulary. Never listen to the onlookers proclaiming your doom, but instead take God's lead to your future success. And how long will that take, you might wonder? Just as long as it takes! Enjoy the process and you'll prosper along the way continually moving forward by achieving a steady stream of success.
