Did you know that you have the power of innovation at your disposal?
Believe it or not it's a talent everyone has, but many believe they don't. If you were ever amazed at someone's creative abilities with the thought that you could never be so clever, well you were wrong because you are!
You can create and be innovative too. Like everything else, it just takes practice, time and patience. Everyone is born creative with great potential for excellence and success.
Looking back to your childhood, did you ever do something crazy like color the sky on one of your school drawings green and the grass blue, simply because you saw something a little differently than the rest of the class? And did someone set you straight about your error by getting you to change your masterpiece to look "the right way?"
One such incident in my kindergarten class left me with a profound belief that shame is often associated with the art of being different rather than it being a virtue to be celebrated. I can easily remember that day. Our class was enjoying a peaceful morning of drawing family pictures and coloring. In a split second the calm was broken by the loud high-pitched scream of our teacher scolding the boy in front of me for coloring his parents with a black crayon rather than leaving them white to match his skin color. Then she ripped his paper in half and told him to start over again. His tears did nothing to quell her outrageous behavior.
I never forgot her reaction which would have been more appropriate if he were about to run in front of a car or was ready to punch another student in the face. Yet his only crime was to see his parents in a different way than his teacher did.
Perhaps his parents actually resembled the picture in some way, but more likely he was coloring them from somewhere deep within his creative mind the way I did when I used finger paints and was told my colors didn't make an acceptable blend.
Whatever his thinking, it was out of the "Crayon box" and it was not appreciated. So for a number of years I kept myself and my creative ideas private.
It is incidents such as those mentioned that have kept the innovative spirit of many hidden because of their fear for seeing life beyond what others consider normal. But that doesn't mean we can't bring it back to life. The light of innovative thinking never burns out; it only remains stifled from a lack of use.
If you're facing difficult times financially or the fear of languishing into the mediocre has gripped you, there's no need to panic!
It's never too late to let the box of crayons from our kindergarten class draw life into fresh new ideas that push our creative potential to new heights. All our minds require is that we close our eyes and cover our ears to the sights and sounds of clanking brass against the gold of fresh ideas. We must make a choice between accepting approval from the masses or living our dreams through our unique expression.
What do you want to do?
