Most of us have used time as a scapegoat for our lack of organization at one time or another. "We need more hours in a day," we complain. But no matter what, it keeps stealing them away.
We're sure we've been victimized by this insidious essence that unfairly takes control over our lives. It makes us late and keeps us from living our dreams.
So can we ever be free? Or is it our fate to be dominated by the constant sound of time ticking away while it shortens our lives?
I was inclined to agree until one night when I was rushing to get to an appointment. Running unfashionably late because I had lost track of time, I had a startling epiphany.
It was not time that was my enemy, it was me! I made the decision to push time to the edge and let it work against me at the last minute.
This is what we do. We take on too many activities or we are not disciplined about our time. Our work hours are too long or we become slaves to one or two hour traffic jams twice a day. This is where all our time is ticking away, stealing our lives, but it is within our control to make time our friend instead of our foe.
The Bible tells us to do all things in moderation, so time actually helps us to easily limit what we do in order to not overdo. As you can see, if we work with time it's really on our side.
It may not be so easy for some, but we can make time our ally by taking control over how we live. If we moderate our work, our play, and our hobbies, we can center our lives around God first and our families second, thereby having the power to accomplish everything our hearts desire and still put the most important things first.
We do this initially on a leap of faith. However, you'll have to find your own way out of this maze of "running out of time."
You might consider waking up an hour or two earlier every day or staying up just a little bit later. However, sleep is important for happiness and a good day so you can't allow time to steal your sleep. You have to be in control of time to make it your friend, remember?
If you get an hour for your lunch at work, you can bring small hobbies, your latest book or your laptop computer if you write. It doesn't take long to create a short story or an article.
Or how about cutting back on television and only watching it for special shows or for viewing a movie with your children? Idyll time spent with your television for hours does not make a good hobby and it is clearly a waste of time.
Only you can know how to organize your time, so get busy, and don't take too long.
