An economic recession or even depression need not cause emotional depression. However, with headlines and media doomsayers constantly repeating reports of home foreclosures and showing pictures of the former middle class emerging homelessness, it is easy to let feelings of helplessness seep into the conscious mind and cause one to be cynical.
Much of the fear comes from the fact that many are attached to a career or corporation that is facing the need to lay people off. However, for entrepreneurial and creative minded types, these times of need present an unprecedented opportunity for success and reinvention.
The needier people become, the more opportunities there are to fill those needs, and people historically appreciate quality items and services, rather than the needless bling and junk people mindlessly buy at the mall.
One item that people need more than ever is valuable information. For example, I am noticing an onslaught of people rushing to the Internet searching for work at home opportunities as an alternative to spending their days polishing resumes and applying for jobs that simply don't exist.
Although many will fall pray to scammers filling their heads with dreams of infinite wealth with little or no effort, some will see the infinite number of possibilities for making money that exist online that do not exist in the brick and mortar world and find a suitable niche there.
I've been able to tap into this market with my e-book business selling inexpensive e-books directing people on how to make money online either through selling on a website, affiliate marketing, auction sites, or even social marketing.
Also, as retail stores close and liquidate items, I am able to snatch these items up and offer them for a discount on my EBay site.
What I see from my own example is a potential rise of the creative class, more cooperation instead of competition, and an overall greater development of self reliance skills and less dependence on government or corporate infrastructure.
Out of this global economic struggle, a renaissance could emerge as people are forced to get creative in how they live, and how they earn a living. And the Internet is like a new Wild West for the twentieth century.
One doesn't have to be Bill Gates or be born an entrepreneur, one must simply spend time reading about it, getting online, seeing what others are doing, and avoiding scams which are easy to spot. Also, a completely open mind is foremost when it comes to transitioning from an order taker to a self directed entrepreneur.
A little over a hundred years ago, nearly everyone in America was self employed, so there's no reason this can't happen again, especially with the Internet, where one can start a business for virtually nothing.
I recommend sites such as entreprenuer.com, or magazines such as Small Business or Work at Home which show you how to start businesses that can be launched for under $100. There's a virtual goldmine out there for you, if you're willing to sift through the sand. end#
