If improving self confidence is your desire, one of the greatest self confidence techniques is hypnosis. There are a lot of myths about hypnosis so what are these myths and how can hypnosis be used to create that much desired quality of self confidence?

Let's start by describing what hypnosis does. It is a scientifically proven technique that can greatly aid the improvement of behaviour and break all those bad habits. It has in some cases improved mental health. Through hypnosis many people have lost weight, quit smoking and created the self confidence and self esteem to become truly successful.

Hypnosis is a method to bypass the conscious mind and use the subconscious mind to alter your belief system. You are helped to experience a deeply relaxing state and it is at this point that the conscious mind becomes a little more dormant and the subconscious mind takes more control. The subconscious mind is then ready to take positive suggestions on board that could drastically improve your life.

The myths that surround hypnosis. Mention the word hypnosis and people will inevitably think of stage acts that they have seen at some time or other. Impressive as these may be, hypnosis becomes unattractive when people think that they may be put to sleep or rendered unconscious and then made to perform some ridiculous act.

Hypnosis is an approved and highly recognised therapy. You would not be put to sleep or made unconscious. Instead you would still be conscious and aware albeit the conscious mind will be somewhat dormant and the subconscious mind more accessible to the implanting of positive suggestions.

When it comes to making a fool of yourself on stage it is very helpful to remember that in the state of hypnosis, you cannot be made to do anything you do not want to do. People who act out the hypnotist's suggestions on stage are normally extrovert people who would be readily up for a laugh and a joke under the control of their conscious minds anyway.

Hypnosis is like the state before you fall asleep or when you are just starting to awake. It is a deep state of relaxation. You could say it is almost trance like; the conscious mind not quite being fully functional and the subconscious mind being open to suggestions. It is worth pointing out here that it is not a good idea to talk to others about bad news when they are just falling asleep or awakening as the conscious mind is not filtering out the conversation and the person can really start the day off feeling completely miserable.

The conscious mind is a great filter that dispels any messages that your belief system cannot comprehend. It takes continuously repeated messages before the suggestions sink into the subconscious mind. Because hypnosis by-passes the conscious level of the mind it is so much easier to get to the subconscious level and plant the belief system that you have self confidence, that you can loose weight or you can give up smoking.

Another way of avoiding the conscious level has been the use of subliminal messages. In the past adverts on television have been placed on the screen at such a fast speed that you do not actual see them, so your conscious mind does not pick them up but the subconscious mind does. This technique is very much frowned upon these days.

What can hypnosis do for you? In the hypnotic state the subconscious mind can be easily programmed to accept the ideas of self confidence, a greater self esteem or the belief that you can loose weight and stop smoking. The subconscious mind controls all our behaviours, therefore the removal of negative thoughts will rebuild self esteem.

And Self Hypnosis? This is very similar to hypnosis, the difference being that once in the state of deep relaxation the suggestions come from either an audio medium like a tape cassette player or you create positive mental images yourself, within your own imagination.

Hopefully at this point you haven't fallen asleep and have gained a little insight into how hypnosis can improve self confidence and self esteem plus improve your life generally.
