If you are taking prescription drugs and believe they will cure you illnesses you are a foolish person. If you also believe that government agencies will protect your health if a certain drug causes extreme harm to your body, you are in for a great surprise too. This is not just my opinion; it's also the opinion of a well-know medical doctor by the name of Joseph Mercola, who practices alternative medical procedures at his Chicago clinic.
Here's what he says, "Believe me folks, the drug companies are not your friend. They could care less about your health. Their main concern is corporate profits." He is also very concerned about the conflicts of interest between some members of Congress and Big Pharma.too
It seems that this could be a troubling issue for all of us. Prescription drug prices and benefits are among the hottest political topics and many members of Congress also have another reason to keep their eyes on pharmaceutical companies.
You see there are senators, and House members and their families that own tens of millions of dollars in stock in drug manufactures. So profits for these manufacturers could rise or fall depending of what kind of actions Congress may take.
Now while these legislator's stock holdings are perfectly legal it does create some real concerns for many watchdogs and public policy experts. Here's a few of those legislators who own stocks.
Representative Robin Hayes, a Republican of North Carolina is one of the wealthiest members of Congress and owned more than $11 million in drug stocks on December 31, 1999.
Representative Jim Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin owned shares worth $2.2 million to $7.1 million in five drug companies. He is the ranking Republican on a Judiciary subcommittee that often reviews patent legislation that can benefit name brand drug companies.
Senator John Kerry, Democrat from Massachusetts sits on the Senate Commerce Committee that likely will have a role in shaping any Medicare drug package. His wife Teresa, a Heinz family heiress owns shares in eight drug companies worth $2.1 million to $4.2 million.
In addition there are also more than half of the experts hired to advise the government on the safety and effectiveness of medicine that have financial relationships with the pharmaceutical companies. These experts are supposed to be independent, but USA Today found that 54% of the time, they have a direct financial interest in drug or topic they are asked to evaluate.
There are about 300 of these pharmaceutical experts on 18 advisory committees who make decisions that affect the health of millions of Americans and billions of dollars in drug sales. So with all this conflict of interest going on every day in the pharmaceutical world, we should be greatly concerned how safe and reliable prescription drugs are for everyone.
Many naturopathic and holistic doctors and even physicians who practice natural and alternative medicine are appalled how many of their fellow doctors are swept into the idea of prescribing drugs for any illness of their patients.
Dr. Joseph Mercola, like many other doctors who practice his type of methods know the extreme dangers of prescription drugs. They are very concerned that members of Congress do not push for more stringent regulations for drugs.
Of course now we know the answer why nothing is done about more regulation of drugs. If you have stock worth millions in those companies why would you want to do anything that would cause any disruption to your investments?
With all the reports of how dangerous and life-threatening prescription drugs can be it really bothers me that there aren't enough Congressmen to finally insist on more investigation and regulation of the industry. It's been proven many times that prescription drugs not only cause many serious health conditions but also thousands and thousands of deaths too.
What will it take to change all this? Will there have to be millions of cases of these serious health conditions, instead of thousands of cases, to finally erupt until something is done about it? I believe stronger public opinion about this serious health issue could be the answer we need to solve this problem. Why not be one to voice your opinion now?
