Well here again is another idiotic and dangerous recommendation coming from a medical organization.
Since the obesity epidemic is now so out of control in this country; the American Academy of Pediatrics believes it would be a good idea to start giving children as young as eight year olds statin drugs.
This was outlined in the latest published policy clinical report entitled "Lipid Screening and Cardiovascular Health in Childhood".
What is so interesting is that the author Stephen R. Daniels, M.D. has worked as a consultant to Abbott Laboratories and Merck (on matters unrelated to their cholesterol drugs) But could you still think this is something he might profit from?
I'm really concerned that recommendations like these are coming forth more and more all the time. I just wonder where the next recommendation of a drug might come from next. Drugging kids is about as lowdown and as despicable as it can get in the world of medicine and the "Almighty Big Pharma".
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is recommending cholesterol screening for all children who are overweight or obese.
Children who have parents or grandparents that developed heart disease at an early age or have other risk factors are also candidates for screening. The AAP is recommending that children be screened as early as age two.
Now if grandpa ever had a heart attack at an early age, his grandson or granddaughter may now have to get blood workup done before they ever start to preschool.
Here's something else interesting that the AAP committee on nutrition is recommending. If a child is 8 years or older with an LDL concentration of 190 mg/dl (or 160 mg /dl with a family history of early heart disease or 2 additional risk factors or 130 mg/dl if diabeties mellitus is present) treatment should be considered.
The AAP also recommends that children drink low-fat milk but they don't mention to them to avoid red meat and milk that comes from cows injected with bovine growth hormones.
The Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility recommends that people not consume products from cows that have been injected with any kind of bovine growth hormones. It not only increases disease rates in cows but has also been linked to possible increases in cancer and antibiotic resistance in humans too.
Doctor Daniels believes that cholesterol drugs are "generally safe" for children. This is a rather strange opinion since there are doctors who don't even think they are safe for adults. Shane Ellison, a former pharmaceutical chemist doesn't have anything nice to say about statins, either, in a report called "Life Saving Cholesterol Facts" published at News With Views.com.
This is something else you should realize. Children don't get high cholesterol unless they eat the wrong foods. If you ever paid any attention to what parents have in their grocery carts you should be shocked at what you see sometimes.
I don't frequent the grocery store like my wife does but when I do go with her I am very observant. I have been amazed what I have seen in some carts. It was actually hard to find many items in their carts that was nutritious food.
Here's my appeal to all parents. If you are truly interested in raising healthy kids, learn more about nutrition. Don't have your kids grow into adulthood with all kinds of serious illnesses or diseases because they didn't eat healthy food.
If you would like to get some really valuable information on nutrition, I highly recommend you view the documentary called "All Jacked Up" It's focused almost entirely on showing you what's wrong with the "Standard American Diet" and the real cost of that diet in terms of disease, emotional distress and broken lives. You can find it by doing a google search on the Internet.
If you watch this movie and don't come away with the idea of choosing a healthier diet then you are not looking at life realistically.
It's a shame that many doctors seem more focused on medication than prevention. What is even more of a shame is their patients have been brainwashed into thinking that prescription drugs will solve their illness.
Many people either don't have any idea what harm they are doing to their body when taking prescription drugs or they don't even care to know. They just let their doctor make the decision for them.
If you have that kind of attitude you can expect some serious consequences in the future. The consequences could be more horrendous than you would ever believe. And it might be even more difficult than you can handle when it happens. Give this some serious thought, it's a very important issue.
To your good health,
