As professionals and dynamic spirits wanting to have a little fun in life we have a repertoire of self-images to choose from at any given time—they're called identities and we use them to help make our lives flow. And because of this it's important that we understand that the image we project should be based on the role or life game we're playing at the time. That is, if you want to gain respect for who you say you're being in life. This is why it's essential we define the life game we want to play by putting a name on the game. REMEMBER THIS: IF YOU CAN'T DEFINE IT... YOU CAN'T HAVE IT. After defining your life game I want you to be clear about your intentions. So, before stepping out of your home everyday I want you to ask yourself the following questions: 1. What are my intentions for today? 2. What image do I want to project today? 3. How do I want others to perceive me today? 4. Am I being authentic?" When we speak about anything being authentic; we mean it is real, reliable, bona-fide and genuine. If I were to purchase a designer handbag from a street vendor in a major city, naturally, I would question its authenticity. Even though it may look just as real as the one a friend purchased from the designer store on Via Monte Napoléone in Milan, Italy, it is not genuine. And with closer inspection and honesty, I allow myself to admit that it is indeed a fake. This is the same honesty we must permit ourselves to have about the clothes that we wear and our image; which is the way we are perceived or regarded by others. And we certainly don't want to forget our body image and self-image—the way we feel about ourselves. Darling, your image is your appearance, your look, or your persona, and each of us has our own. It's called being authentic and being true to yourself and the styles, cuts, fabrics and designers that work best for your image, your body type and what you want to project about yourself to the world. Recently, the number of women who have become fashion followers has troubled me. Many are purchasing fashions that are not complimentary to their body types or their authentic image. A few months ago I worked with a beautiful executive who had over sixty suits in her closet from one particular designer, all beautiful. But, does any woman need over sixty suits of any one designer hanging in her closet? When I asked her about her wardrobe and why she had an excessive number of just one designer she responded by saying, "This is what all the important women are wearing." I knew my work was cut out for me at this point--she had not been true to her authentic image. She had become a full-fledged fashion follower. I want you to understand that there is an absolute and profound power in projecting your best image, which has nothing to do with what other women are wearing. It's all about you, darling, your authenticity and your individuality. It's about understanding how to incorporate different designers and eclectic pieces into your wardrobe that reflect your genuineness. You must know that your selection of fashion has the potential to influence in a powerful way; your own mood level, as well as the impressions you make on others. In creating or recreating your image and wardrobe all you have to remember is that you're already "da bomb" darling. So let your selection of fashion and clothing reflect your individuality, and watch how others perceive you as being the latest fashion icon. Trust me, they'll try to follow you and emulate your style; but, they will not be able to pull it off, because its authentically you. Chloé Taylor Brown www.chloetaylorbrown.com |
