In the last article, I addressed the growing trend of our seeing ourselves through and living through the eyes of others. And, in it I eluded to an effective way of avoiding this trap or getting out of it if you have fallen. Now, for most of you who are reading this, I probably don't have to insult your intelligence by assuming what most might consider a no-brainer. Yet, I figure if you are on this site reading these articles you are probably already a step or two up the evolutionary thinking chain. But, for those of us who are still struggling with this, let me make the following statement. Everyone on the planet, from any walk of life, has agendas based on their paradigms or core belief systems. There are no exceptions. We come to perceive, judge and act from that place which has been molded and formed from the time of conception. And, because it comes from such unconscious place, it is often an automatic reflex. For many, thinking outside the box is not even a consideration. Then you have those few select individuals, and I believe these numbers are growing, that have the capacity to realize that their own paradigms are but a drop in the bucket compared to the sum total of what is called reality. In other words, they know that in the larger scheme of things they have never even met Jack, much less know him. They also have an amazing ability to pick and choose what external imput they allow into their consciousness. They know that sure everyone has an opinion and its human nature to want to be validated by having someone agree with and take your advice when it is so "generously" offered. But, they instinctively understand that it is not their responsibility to validate someone else. Ultimately, they process incoming data and pick and choose the best information for themselves in any given situation. It's called critical thinking. Let's break this down. In terms of making judgements, the dictionary defines critical as, "thinking about something and giving a careful judgement about how good or bad it is." Now, nowhere in that definition does it say relying on someone else to think and give careful judgement. Furthermore, critical is synonymous of analytical, censuring, discerning, discriminating, exacting and penetrating. You starting to get the picture? This coupled with lateral thinking is what empowered folks do naturally without effort. And, for those of you who are unfamiliar with lateral thinking, it just a fancy term for using the imagination to see patterns and relationships between things that maybe unfamiliar to you but not to someone else. These thinking skills, that are oh so important to living authentically from our inner power, are actually quite simple to learn if we want to make the effort. They do take practice but are well worth it. Everything from our self-image to the perceptions we hold of others hinges on our thoughts and beliefs. And, this goes for everyone for which we come into contact. Remember as we are sizing up our environment, so is everyone else. The trick is getting out of our own heads and becoming aware of greater realities outside of our own little universe. I'm going to get a little technical here, but stay with me.It does bear relevance. The brain processes one billion bits of information per second, we only pick out of that data that which is in accordance with what we have already experienced, been taught or belive. Now, think about that. Its a profound statement on the power of our own minds as a recording machine. If we can learn the practice of expanding our conscious awareness of what we are recording, then those complex thinking skills that allow us to make our own decisions and create our own identities without relying on others to do so for us becomes so much easier and eventually second nature. We are all on this journey together but we are all ultimately responsible for ourselves and the rolls we play. So, the next time someone tries to manipulate what we believe or makes us doubt ourselves or our value, we must remember that they are actually limiting us and our innate ability to expand our own potential. And, they are doing this without the intention of helping us, but rather unconsciously trying to validate their own doubts and insecurities. They mean well but true awareness prevents the trap.
