We used to have a saying back in the days which I don't hear too often but it's just as true today as it was then and it goes like this. Encouragement Sweetens the Labour – there was even a song of the same name and all it meant was that when you're working or involved in doing something regardless of what it is that you're doing, a few kind words here and there supporting you in your efforts tends to make it seem worthwhile and it can provide you with that little piece of motivation you need to keep going, in fact depending on who makes the comment and what is said it can genuinely propel you to greater heights than you ever thought possible. Now people often speak about the financial rewards linked with doing good work but rarely do I hear comments on the personal satisfaction that comes from doing your work and receiving recognition for those accomplishments, and it must be said that it can be just as important sometimes even more so to be acknowledged for your work, to know that others have seen what you have done or what you are doing and they're pleased with the results, that they like what you've achieved and are glad to let you know can be reward in itself. Who doesn't remember being told well done by their parents as a child and how your chest was swollen up with pride and a sense of satisfaction, how happy you felt at knowing that mum or dad was proud of you because of what you had done whether it was that cup that you made in pottery class or the finger painting that took pride of place on the fridge, it was all recognition and it made you feel proud, you were ten feet tall and it showed, and all because someone whose opinion mattered praised you. Well those same principles don't change over the years, and in fact the need to be recognized grows stronger as we get older as often times this is the only real recognition we perceive that we get in our adult years, our friends and families as we get older seem to assume that we naturally know that they think highly of us, and maybe it's true that deep down you know that they value you but it's still important to hear it said and have someone demonstrate how much you're appreciated. Yes encouragement certainly sweetens the labour and if you wish to receive that encouragement then you must be prepared to work to the best of your capabilities, consistently not because you want praise but because that's how we all should work, as best as we can to the best of our abilities and by consistently aiming this high you place yourself in line for praise and other rewards too numerous to mention and in adopting an attitude of doing your best you ensure that your chances for recognition increase and more than this, the self satisfaction that comes from doing your best which is based upon a positive mental attitude will return to you the same in kind that you have given which is always the best approach you could possibly have. Now take a deep breath, straighten up and let's get moving we've got work to do. Carl Mason is a Mentor, Coach/Life Consultant and CEO of On Point Solutions.
