Power Conclusions

I have made my miracles happen one day at a time through my life. I believe with the power of positive thinking + prayer I have taken advantage of “the Secret”. The following is the powerful conclusion of Dr. Joan’s story with her finding her way back in torturous riches to rags to riches story:

NOVEMBER OF 2004, I finally received my settlement from UnumProvident. A judge awarded me 7.7 million dollars in punitive damages and bad faith fraudulent practices. The Ninth Circuit Appellate Court upheld the judgment in a three-judge unanimous ruling and wrote a long written opinion to go with it. This opinion has been cited in courtrooms around the country.

Since then, a mandatory 45-state investigation re-opened over 112,000 cases which had closed after 2000. UnumProvident was fined fifteen million dollars. In addition, California fined them eight million dollars.

In a glorious moment of turn-around, I was invited to the press conference held by California State Insurance Commissioner, John Garamendi, to announce the results of the investigations into UnumProvident’s claims practices. It was held on the steps of the federal court building where my lawsuit had been heard. I was gratified to hear him tell Unum shape up or ship out of California. It was a dream come true for me to be next to him and to be allowed to share my story.

We did two press conferences that day—one in San Francisco and another in L.A. I rode in the commissioner’s chauffeured car to the airport. Mr. Garamendi told me that my story and my case was inspirational to him and those he worked with.

In Los Angeles, I stood at the podium with an array of cameras and videos recording the event. At long last, I was able to share my tragic story with the world. Finally, people listened to what I had to say, and it felt so good. During my talk, I spoke about all the claimants who have had their benefits wrongfully denied and the lives that have been destroyed by the callous treatment of their insurance company. I spoke in honor of the people who did not yet have a voice. And then I spoke about the Miracle Makers Club.
