Exercise plays an important role. Walk every morning, jog, go to the gym, do yoga, dance, swim, or work out. Walking two miles in the morning is a great way to wake up and relax.

I am probably the laziest person on the planet. I have had to motivate myself to walk the dog so that we can exercise. I joined a gym but refused to take the time to go. My son begs me to play basketball, and I find excuses. This was acceptable until I recently found my body fatigued, pale, and not up to the demands I was placing upon myself. I began experiencing anxiety and severe leg cramps, and I no longer awoke with enthusiasm. Thank goodness I discovered yoga as a way to move my body in a peaceful and harmonious manner.

The Chinese system of healing correlates symptoms with emotions. For example, lower back pain is associated with feeling sorry for yourself, and anger symbolizes not getting your needs met, not being taken care of, or worries about money and the lack of money. Oftentimes when I treated patients as a chiropractor, the healing wouldn’t start until the underlying emotional components were acknowledged and dealt with. Neck pain and upper back pain is associated with stressing out about multiple problems and carrying the world on your shoulders, just like the mythological figure, Atlas. Knee problems stem from being afraid to stand on your own two feet. You get the idea.

In Louise Hays’ book, Heal Your Body, she links specific health problems with its related feelings. Take for example bladder problems or urinary tract infections. According to Hays, the corresponding emotion is “anxiety, holding on to old ideas, fear of letting go, being pissed off.” She suggests the affirmation, “I comfortably and easily release the old and welcome the new in my life. I am safe.” For headaches, she suggests that you might be invalidating the self. Her remedy for curing headaches is for you to affirm, “I love and approve of myself. I see myself and what I do with eyes of love. I am safe.”
