The message of the Bible says that God is both trustworthy130 and unchanging131. Concerning the existence of the universe, the Bible says that because we are of the Earth, our understanding is limited to the things of Earth132 but, through the agent of faith, we can understand ‘that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.133’ Regarding man’s eternal destiny, the Bible says that beyond the grave awaits the treasure of eternal life for those who will respond to its unique challenge. This invitation is perfectly encapsulated in the words of Jesus Christ, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die134’ .Here we shall end our deliberations by recognising a final correlation between scientific thought and biblical doctrine concerning the nature of truth itself. According to both science and the Bible, truth is expressly not a subjective commodity. As Kitty Ferguson so concisely puts it, ‘one of the assumptions of science and religion [is] that there is such a thing as objective truth135’ - science and the Bible are agreed that the truth is waiting to be discovered.
APPENDIX
Pythagoras’ Theorem
In any right-angled triangle, the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides
a2 = b2 + c2
The area of square A is therefore equal to the area of the other two squares added together.
Fermat’s Last Theorem
If Pythagoras is expressed as shown below, then the equation will not be true for values of n which are greater than 2.
an = bn +cn
The volume of a cube of side A is therefore not equal to the sum of the volumes of the cubes B and C.
TRUTH TABLE FOR TWO DOORS
Scenario 1: If Door A leads to life.…
Which door will he say leads to life?
Answer from Truthful Keeper = Door B
Answer from UnTruthful Keeper = Door B
Scenario 2: If Door B leads to life…
Which door will he say leads to life?
Answer from Truthful Keeper = Door A
Answer from UnTruthful Keeper = Door A
In either scenario, each Keeper indicates the door to death if the question, ‘Which door will he say leads to life?’ is asked. The correct action then, is to take the opposite door whichever Keeper is addressed and whatever answer is given.
PROOF OF THE INFINITE QUANTITY OF PRIME NUMBERS
From: The Elements, Euclid (circa 300 BC).
Let P1 be a prime number and calculate P2 as follows: p2 = 1 x 2 x 3 x … x p1 + 1
So that P2 is one more than the product of all whole numbers between 1 and P1. If P1 is a prime number then the resultant number P2 will also be prime. Because it is always possible to generate a larger prime number (P2) from the previous prime number (P1), the application of this formula empirically demonstrates that the number of primes is actually infinite.
