Inspiration - Personal Development at its Best!
Thursday, August 16, 2007

Here is an amazing video I recently came across. When you consider the obstacles this man must face every day of his life, well - what can I say - Nick Vujicic is truly an inspiration ...

According to Nick, who has had plenty of practice overcoming obstacles, in order to triumph over such impediments, we need first to see where we are in relation to the obstacle - then we must visualise ourselves overcoming the obstacle.

Nick is a devout Christian and his life is a real testimony to his strong faith in God and his goodness. He provides a real lesson in life for us all - wherever we are and whatever our circumstances, we can rise above them, find our true purpose and live a successful life.

Tony generally holds workshops and seminars that last for several days, so in this short 20 minute talk he feels really challenged to give something of value. However, I think he does manage to do that.

Take a look and judge for yourself (oh by the way, you will need to forgive Tony for using the F-word if you do watch) ...

OK - so here are those 6 basic needs again - according to Tony ...

1. Certainty
2. Uncertainty
3. Significance
4. Connection
5. Growth
6. Contribution

I think it's an interesting list. It is, of course, derived from Maslow's hierarchy of needs; which are ...

Self-Actualisation
Esteem
Social
Safety
Physiological

'Growth' and 'Contribution' - the Spiritual needs - certainly tie in with Abraham Maslow's highest need i.e. 'Self Actualisation'. 'Connection' is really Maslow's 'Social' need by another name. 'Significance' is the 'Esteem' need & 'Certainty' is the 'Safety' need.

In Tony's list, the 'Phisiological' need i.e. the basic human need for food, water etc, is simply missing. However, I also think Tony's 'Uncertainty' need is interesting - the need for excitement. It's not represented in Maslow's hierarchy.

Perhaps Maslow would argue that it's not really a 'need' in the same sense that the others are - who knows? However, I think Tony is right - we do all have at very least, a desire to live an exciting life and we do have the need to balance that desire against the opposite need to live and work in safety.

The real key to success in life is to consider that need right at the top of the hierarchy - the 'Self-Actualisation' need. This concerns finding out what your life is all about and then being bold enough to actually live it!
