If you have been reading the Inspiration Newsletter for any length of time, you will already know how I feel about the subject of New Year’s Resolutions. They are essentially, full of good intention. But – and it is a big but – in making them, you are probably setting yourself up for a fall.
Instead of making New Year’s Resolutions this year, I suggest that instead, you concentrate on defining your vision for the next five years. If you already have a vision, then that’s great – you can revisit it, review it, rework it and recommit yourself to it. If you don’t have a vision for the period of your life immediately ahead, then I suggest you use the method I outlined in my vision exercise.
For people who need to make some change, the kind of stuff that resolutions are usually made of, I would like to offer a bit more advice. Firstly, forget about resolutions; instead turn them all into goals. A New Year’s Resolution might be to stop smoking, stop eating chocolate, get fit, stop drinking, swearing, be nicer to people. But, for most people, the magic of the resolution is lost when it is first broken; whereas a goal is a completely different matter.
When you set a goal – for example to reach a certain weight – the matter is not ended when you have an off-day and end up consuming a whole giant-sized bar of Cadbury’s Chocolate. Heck, it is not even over if you have an off-week; it is a goal and if you are committed, you will pick yourself up after the aberration and get on with what you need to do to move forward.
So start thinking in terms of goals. Here are some blisteringly good goal-setting tips and here are some of the most common resolutions people set every year together with a little help on each of them:
If you want to stop smoking, that’s great. You really don’t need me to tell you that it is a bad habit and it is not good for your health; you already know that right? What you need is concrete help. So, we have a free book (Quit Smoking Forever) that contains a very good plan and you can get a copy in exchange for a social mention (Tweet, Like or +1).
Here’s a weight loss plan for you – completely free!
It is probably the most unusual weight loss program ever invented, but it works as far as getting immediate results is concerned. You just need to commit yourself to it for a period of six weeks. However, after that, you could easily pile the weight back on if you go back to your old eating habits so do try to use this program to make some permanent changes and you need never be overweight again.
Get Out of Debt
Money management is quite a subject. The real problem for most people in debt is that the problem cannot be permanently solved in the short term, and that is usually what people want when they turn to others for help. However, it requires a long term view and a long term plan to get things right – this post contains everything you need to know to permanently sort out your finances.
To Become Wealthy
In the modern economies of the developed world, becoming wealthy is a very real possibility for most people. I know that statement may be hard to swallow for some people, but it is also true. The difficulty is not that there is no opportunity; it is a question of how committed you are to the project. If you want to become wealthy, I suggest you read this article to get you into the right mindset about what you can achieve.
To Give Up Something (Break an Addiction)
Smoking is such a common addiction that many people want to give up so I included it separately in the list above. However, there are many other addictions you might wish to address, such as:
- Video Games
Many of these bad habits are a symptom of a deeper problem and so breaking them can sometimes be done by using a displacement technique we spoke about previously.
To Get Organised
With your vision and goals in place, you will be amazed at what a difference it can make to your personal organisation. Until you decide for yourself what is really important, you simply do not have the necessary focus to decide where your time and effort is best placed. So do that first i.e. get your vision and your goals worked out first and then take a look at my time management tips.
Remember to set goals for yourself and next year could be a turning point in your life! Here’s wishing all Inspiration readers a happy and prosperous new year.__________________________________________________________________
