Here’s a little poem I wrote for mothers day with gratitude for everything my mum did for me during her life. Sadly, she passed away last year, but she will always be remembered by our whole family as being someone who loved unconditionally, which is the greatest gift a mother can give to her children.
When the minister who conducted her funeral asked me if I could sum my mum up in one phrase, what would that phrase be? I had no hesitation in saying that, “she was always on my side.” If you are looking for a Mother’s Day poem to read to your mum, or write on her card, I hope you will consider using this one:
My Mum, Always on My Side
by Will Edwards
You rocked me slowly in the crib
You wiped me gently with my bib
You held me close and sang to me
And watched me grow so patiently
You shed a tear when I was sick
You laughed to hear me with that hick
You made the best darned apple pie
You showed me beauty in the sky
You cheered when I won, for having heart
You cheered when I lost, for taking part
You always taught me not to boast
And helped me see what matters most
You saw me walk those stark school hallways
You loved without condition, always
You saw what I would be someday
You were behind me all the way
You wiped my eyes dry when I cried
You were always on my side
You have even wiped my bum
Today, I’m proud to call you Mum

Hello Will
What a lovely poem, it made me cry, but I loved it. Thank you for sharing it. I too lost my mum at the begining of 2011, we had hoped she would have made it to her 90th Birthday, but it wasn’t to be. My mum was a truely wonderful mother and dearly loved by all who knew her.. she was just one of those people that at a first sight and meeting you loved her immediately, she just gave out a lovely warmth to everybody. I have found it difficult to get myself in the right frame of mind to carry on with my on-line business since mum died but I take comfort in the belief that she is beside me and saying, as she did when I have had bad times in my life, don’t give up now, you have come this far, take a deep breath and start again, and just be yourself.
Kind Regards
Julia
Hi Julia
I’m glad you liked the poem and I’m sorry to hear about your mum passing away. She has clearly taught you well and I feel sure she will be there looking down roaring you on:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
She will be one of those witnesses.
Will
