How to Identify Your Life Purpose

Today I heard of a Scottish couple who have won £162 million ($262 million) in the largest cash jackpot ever won in Europe. It reminded me of an exercise I often set for people who attend my workshops. It is a very simple little exercise but a very powerful one too. It involves imagining what you would do if you won a prize that large. Hey, as we have an abundance mentality, you could write yourself an even larger cheque in this exercise if you wish.

So, if you would like to have a go at this, just imagine for a moment what a win of that kind of size would mean to you. Think about it. Enjoy the idea and start, mentally spending that money. Make yourself a list of all the things you would do.

Here’s the sort of things that many people tend to think about right away:

• Buy The House I’ve Always Wanted
• Buy Mum & Dad The House They Always Wanted
• Look After all My Family and Close Friends, Financially
• Buy the Car I Always Wanted
• Have a Big Party
• Travel the World
• Take Long Holidays
• Just Doing Stuff, Going Places and Enjoying life

Let’s say, just for the sake of argument, that after you had accomplished all the things on that little list, you had blown a cool £20 million ($32 million). Phew! I hope you do this exercise and really enjoy mentally spending all that loot. Well, you would still have £142 million ($230 million) left; more than enough to buy anything else you want, that I have omitted, and still have enough to live comfortably, for the rest of your life, just on the interest.

So, think about this carefully. You have had all the fun you wanted, you have bought everything you ever wanted and you have been to all the places you ever wanted to see. Mentally place yourself in that situation. Remember that you have no financial worries and absolutely no material considerations to occupy your thoughts. OK, now answer this question: what would you do with your time?

If something occurs to you, write it down because, when you can answer that question i.e. what you would do with the rest of your life if there were no material considerations to be taken into account, you will be touching on your own values. When people do this in my workshops, they will often say things like this:

• I Would Volunteer to Work in a Charity
• I Would Teach Children
• I Would Become an Expert in Some Field
• I Would Help Deaf People
• I Would Restore Old Furniture
• I Would Write a Novel
• I Would Paint
• I Would Become a Property Developer
• I Would Master a Musical Instrument

These are the kind of things that many people would choose do with their lives. It is what is written in their hearts that they would really like to achieve. The exercise has a way of helping people to get to thinking about what really matters in life. Once we liberate our mind from material considerations, we are ready to identify what is really important to us.

Do this little exercise and it will help you to identify your own life purpose. Oh, and, when your ready, read this book: The Deepest Desire of Your Heart.
