Today is the funeral of Amy Winehouse, one of the most genuinely talented singers to have emerged in recent years.
Amy’s tragic life ended on Saturday, 23rd July. Aged just 27, she joins the list of exceptionally talented singers who died ahead of their time.
Comparisons with the lives of artists such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones, who all died at age 27, are perhaps inevitable.
The latest member of the 27 Club, Amy will be sadly missed by family and friends as well as her fans.
On Monday Amy’s parents visited her home where she died, in north London, to see for themselves the various tributes that had been left by fans. In amongst the flowers and cuddly toys were cigarette cartons and alcoholic drinks, a sad reminder of the low points in the life of this talented artist who seemed to be constantly battling with various addictions in her later years.
Personally, I think it is a terrible shame that her name became a byword with the media for the kind of over-indulgence these items represent and, although I have heard people express opinions to the contrary, I feel a little sad that fag packets and bottles of booze were left along with the flowers for her parents to contemplate.
The cause of her death is still not known. Police are awaiting the results of the toxicology tests, which could take up to four weeks, after which they should be able to get a clearer picture. But Amy’s life will be remembered, not only for her struggle against substance abuse, but also for having created some of the most inspired popular music of our day.

You do have to wonder, I have known people who have dependency issues, I cannot understand that, but that is part of what it is, people who have never battled drugs and addiction cannot understand the world that these people find themselves involved, in it is just not something that you can conceive.
She will be dearly missed for her great contribution to the music world. In spite of her drug addiction in her late years, she can give lessons to other young adults that addiction can destroy one’s youth, life and incredible abilities.
