Kindle Publishing: The Future of Self Publishing in the Balance?

It seems that the news we broke about the problems with the Kindle Publishing platform is now hitting the big sites like Reuters. So far, I have written to Amazon/Kindle on three separate occasions to point out the problems that originally I raised here. I have repeatedly asked them to work with me to find a solution.

Of course, as I suggested in my previous post, the problem turns out to be a lot bigger. Unfortunately, the replies I have received are not very helpful. It is as if someone is trying to find a stock answer from a list of FAQs, when what is needed is someone in a position of authority to understand the problems I have raised and take appropriate action.

As I have already pointed out, here are the challenges we currently face with respect to this issue:

1. Some Kindle Account Holders have named me author – erroneously
2. Some Kindle Account Holders have named me as co-author – erroneously
3. Our Books have been converted very badly to Kindle format
4. The 3D effect covers do not render properly on the Kindle

This is a serious matter in my opinion. It is precisely because of the these issues that we will be forced to change our Statement of Rights within our free ebooks. They will all be changed over the coming months (there are a lot to edit) to discourage people from selling them on Kindle. Personally, as I have said previously, I have no issue with people selling our free books really, but I have an issue with the way it is being done on Kindle.

At the moment, nobody at Amazon/Kindle seems remotely interested in working with me to sort this issue out.

  1. No kidding. They won’t take down my ebook “Train Your Brain” – I let you publish. That’s why I wrote you asking why you were listed as the Author (LOL). Amazon wanted me to do a whole rigamarole (i.e., notorized letter) to their attorney, etc.

I remember thinking I was losing it because I couldn’t remember putting “Train Your Brain” on Kindle. Now with this post I know I didn’t (smile).

Let me know if you ever do get it straightened out.

    Hi Judith

I had not realised that there were so many of our free books up there. Being an ebook publisher, we have been both selling and giving away ebooks for many years. Of course, we could not have anticipated these problems with Kindle. But, it seems they have a massive problem and I just can’t get any sense out of them at the moment. I have written to them a 4th time today.

Let’s hope they wake up soon.

    Cheers,

    Will :)

  3. Hi Will,

Sorry to hear about this – very frustrating indeed. Has Amazon resolved these issue yet? If not, please contact me – I have a close personal friend who works at Amazon that may be able to “give some juice” to these issues. What a great site you have! – Lisa

    Hi Lisa

    Thanks for popping by.

Unfortunately, the Kindle saga continues. I have heard nothing back from Amazon/Kindle for my last two emails. Clearly they have a major spam problem and the people they have working in customer service are simply not authorised or competent enough to comment or deal with the issue.

    Cheers,

    Will :(

I didn’t know about the graphic covers not rendering properly after the Kindle conversion. I am actually finishing up my first book (which I plan on self-publishing) and now I guess I’m in trouble with the Kindle conversion.

Has there been any new updates since you’ve written this post? I guess I’ll get to experience this first hand when my book is finished. You have a really great site here. Thanks in adv!

    Hi David

The post is bang up to date. However, if you are planning to publish your own work, simply provide a flat image and it will render correctly.

    Cheers,

    Will
