Reading Sonny Julius' post today about the power of the mind, I was reminded of my dissertation for my degree, way back. The anaogy of the mind to a computer is a product of our time, of course. In times past, the mind/brain has been compared to various other systems - hydraulic systems for example.
Nevertheless, Sonny makes some good points about the power of the mind to overcome very many difficulties including physical ailments of every kind. Personally, I believe this is absolutely true: the mind has the power to make you ill and it has the power to make you well. We only need consider the well-known placebo-effect to recognise the absolute truth of this assertion.
The theme of Mind Power has been quite central to the whole subject of Peronal Development since the dawn of New Thought; though many, including many advocates of the Law of Attraction, would argue that the influence can be traced back much further; perhaps even to the times of the ancient Egyptians.
I remember once reading, though I cannot remember exactly where, some proposal that said the subconscious mind represents our interface with God; an idea I like and personally find most plausible. The subconscious - what Freud called the unconscious - is an interesting topic in itself of course, and perhaps one we'll return to at some future time. However, here we will simply note that most psychologists believe it to comprise the greater portion of the mind.
